Overview
Mail is a major gateway into any business workplace, as evidenced by the fact that the Postal Service delivers approximately 208 billion pieces of mail per year. Until recently, there had been few if any known cases of bio-terrorism, which may explain why the handling of mail, from a safety and security perspective, has received so little attention and training.
Due to recent events we all better understand that many of the chemical and biological agents that terrorists utilize can be mailed, so it is imperative for anyone who handles mail in the workplace to know exactly how to respond to suspect mail.
Recent events also dictate that we all become more aware of anthrax, its hazards, and how to handle mail that we suspect may contain anthrax agents. An informed initial reaction can lay the groundwork for a successful response, rather than add to the chaos.
